He is the recipient of the RSC Meldola Medal (1998), Durham's Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Teaching (2006), the Bob Hay Lectureship (2008) and the RSC Corday-Morgan Prize (2010).
He has edited the Encyclopaedia of Supramolecular Chemistry (2004), Organic Nanostructures (2008) and the 8-volume Supramolecular Chemistry from Molecules to Nanomaterials (2012).
He spent five years working in the field of solid-state luminescence, developing techniques for dating heated inorganic remains from archaeological and geological sites.
His field of research then changed to the study of lyotropic liquid crystals, using concepts in this field to understand the physical basis of membrane protein interactions.
Dr Fisher’s research indicates we can be divided into four very different personality types — explorers, builders, directors and negotiators — based on the way our body produces and reacts to the brain chemicals dopamine and serotonin, and the hormones testosterone and oestrogen.
If dopamine tends to dominate your personality, she believes you will have a tendency to seek novelty. When serotonin dominates, the guiding personality traits tend to be calmness, loyalty, a fondness of rules and facts, and order.
For Immediate Use Friday 8 March 2002 Professor Richard Templer will become the next Head of the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine.
