In short, Genesis was an allegory and not literal history.
The story of this great change in the conception of the history of Earth is not a simple one.
In the chemical reactions associated with combustion, the atoms in the molecules of the active materials rearrange themselves into new, more stable, molecules in which they are more tightly bound and in the process, releasing surplus energy in the form of heat.
He cured a plague at the Sicilian city of Selinus and claimed he was a god.
If, in the year AD 1600, you had asked an educated European how old the planet Earth was and to recount its history he would have said that it was about 6000 years old and that its ancient history was given by the biblical account in Genesis.
Or put another way, he was first to split the atom.
Any of his secondary discoveries, such as dating the age of the Earth, would have given fame to a lesser scientist.
If you asked the same question of an educated European in AD 1900 you would have received a quite different answer.
