Dating staffordshire pottery

The Staffordshire mantel dog’s expression can be soft or fierce, deplorable or self-satisfied, inquisitive or pleased.

The base coat is layered over with polka dots or brushed patches of rust, copper luster, or black.

Below is a selection of back stamps commonly found on Clarice Cliff's pottery from 1927 to 1964.

Many came from the private library of the architect Thomas Hastings, of the partnership, Carrere and Hastings, responsible for the Library's landmark classical revival building on Fifth Avenue.
